Damian McKenzie has made a successful return to rugby in New Zealand through local club Woodlands in Invercargill.
The 40-test All Black helped his side beat Star 55-17 as he prepares for the Mitre 10 Cup season.
And 27-year-old is taking it one step at a time when it comes to wearing black again.
He's a familiar face in Southland rugby, and on Friday he was back.
McKenzie turned out for his home club and he looks to ease back into rugby here after a stint in Japan.
"It was great fun," McKenzie said. "It's nice to be able to transition back into New Zealand rugby through a game of club footy."
It took McKenzie a little time to find his feet, and others in the crowd were feeling the same.
But once he did, they were treated to a vintage display from the fullback. No sign of the trademark smile but he still impressed off the tee.
And with his running game, McKenzie scored one try and set up a couple more.
Still only 27, McKenzie has plenty of time to chase higher honours.
"It's always been one week at a time for me," he added. "I'm looking forward to getting back to play with Waikato, and if anything pops up after that, I'll just wait and see.
"But I'm going to have to play some good rugby."
It was a family affair for the McKenzies, older brother Marty and cousin Robbie also turned out.
"Parents were watching, and grandad," Damian continued. "So for him to have three grandkids playing in the same team is pretty special."
The backstreets of Invercargill aren't quite the bright lights of international rugby - but it's a step closer for Damian McKenzie.
