With his All Blacks career on the line, coach Ian Foster has turned to Richie Mo'unga to help turn the team's fortunes around in the second test against South Africa at Johannesburg on Sunday (NZ time).
Foster has refrained from making wholesale changes to the team well beaten at Mbombela last week, tweaking the starting XV in four places.
But he has made a key change, handing Mo'unga the reins at first-five, with Beauden Barrett shuffled back to the bench. Barrett has started every test at No.10 this year - three of those four tests have been lost.
The other changes see props Ethan de Groot and Tyrel Lomax promoted to the starting front row, with George Bower slipping back to the reserves and Fletcher Newell named for a debut, as Angus Ta'avao falls out of the matchday squad.
Flanker Shannon Frizell, who missed the entire Ireland series through injury and returned off the bench at Mbombela to score New Zealand's only try, will start on the blindside, with Akira Ioane also relegated to the reserves.
"Belief and confidence remain high in our group, which is working incredibly hard this week," said Foster. "Playing at Ellis Park is always a special occasion for any All Black team and this weekend will be no different.
"Adding to that, the Freedom Cup is on the line, which makes this a challenge that everyone is looking forward to."
Jordie Barrett retains his fullback spot, despite leaving the field injured last week, while brother Beauden is also named, after a scary midair collision and headfirst landing also saw him exit early. Winger Will Jordan keeps his No.14 jersey, despite missing training time thorugh illness this week.
