The onus is on the All Blacks' stellar backline to end their current struggles, centre Rieko Ioane asserts, as the side prepares to face South Africa in the first of two test matches away from home.
After a 2-1 series defeat against Ireland, the All Blacks have travelled to face arguably the toughest ask in the international game, facing the world champion Springboks in their own conditions.
The trip marks the first time in four years the All Blacks have travelled to South Africa, having not done so since before Rugby World Cup 2019.
Changes have been made to the All Blacks' coaching side, with the pair of John Plumtree and Brad Mooar jettisoned as Crusaders assistant Jason Ryan has joined the side as forwards coach.
But while the forwards will play a huge role in matching the Springboks' physical game plan up front, 25-year-old Ioane insists the backs will need to stand up in order to see the All Blacks restore pride against South Africa.
"There's plenty to work on," Ioane said. "We, as backs, need to fire.
"We know that we're coming up against a world-class outfit, especially in their backs… We need to get better, all over the park - whether it's on attack or [defence]."
But the All Blacks won't have it all their own way, with Ioane aware South Africa would have been attentive watchers of the series defeat to Ireland, and making their plans to rub further salt into Kiwi wounds.
Ioane, though, said South Africa's northern hemisphere-style tactics won't lead to any complacency in preparation.
"It's a completely different beast that we're facing this week," he added. "[The] Irish play how they play and [South] Africa have some similarities, but they're smart footballers.
"They'll be able to adjust and see what we did in that Irish series.
"We've just got to plan for their absolute best game. We'll be doing the same.
"We know that at home they won't disappoint, so we're looking forward to it."
The All Blacks face South Africa in Mbombela on Sunday, before travelling for the second game at Johannesburg's famous Ellis Park on August 14 (NZ time).
