Blackcaps captain Kane Williamson will miss the second one-day international against West Indies in Barbados on Saturday (NZ time) due to a quad injury.
Williamson felt tightness in his upper right quad during Thursday's opening game at Kensington Oval, where the Blackcaps were handily beaten by five wickets.
Coach Gary Stead described Williamson’s omission as precautionary and was hopeful he would be available for Monday's final match of the series.
Tom Latham has been named captain of the side in Williamson's absence. Glenn Phillips and Jimmy Neesham have also been named in the starting XI, with Lockie Ferguson dropping out.
The West Indies won the toss and sent New Zealand into bat.
