New Zealand Cricket (NZC) insists it won't allow player power to dictate deals, despite another high-profile player opting out of their contract.
Blackcaps allrounder Colin de Grandhomme has retired, just a few weeks after fast-bowler Trent Boult chose to vacate his central contract.
But while Boult will continue to play for New Zealand, pending his Twenty20 and family commitments, de Grandhomme has gone one step further and opted to foresake international cricket altogether.
"We understand the reasons why Colin's putting his name in the hat, and taking this line and retiring from international cricket," NZC high performance general manager Bryan Stronach told Newshub.
De Grandhomme has pulled stumps to focus on other ventures, including T20 cricket for Adelaide Strikers in the Australian Big Bash League.
De Grandhomme - surprisingly - was one of three Kiwi players selected in this week's draft, which first raised suspicions about his Blackcaps future.
Boult is also bound for the BBL, selected third in the draft a couple of weeks after signing on for the new UAE-based International League with Mumbai Indians' Emirates side, but NZC is adamant these recent departures won't open the floodgates for other players to flow through.
"Talking to the players, understanding their motivations, where they sit in their careers, if they're happy, if they're not, those sorts of things... I think we've got a pretty good relationship with the players," added Stronach.
The NZC Players Association also tells Newshub it's confident this isn't the start of a player exodus and that the vast majority of them remain committed to the black cap.
