Kiwi Scott McLaughlin will start from pole position for Indycar's Music City Grand Prix, after qualifying fastest at Nashville, Tennessee.

The former Aussie Supercars ace clocked 1m 14.5555s around the 3.492km circuit, edging out former Formula One race Romain Gorsjean of Switzerland and Danish rookie Christian Lundgaard.

But countryman Scott Dixon has struggled in qualifying to finish 10th fastest, but will start 14th on the grid on Monday morning (NZ time).

McLaughlin was still on the track when the chequered flag came out on the qualifying session and stopped the clocks with the fast time to pip Grosjean, with Spaniard Alex Palou, Mexican Pato O'Ward and Amercian Josef Newgarden rounding out the top six.

"The car was phenomenal," said McLaughlin. "We did that on one lap, with used tyres... one of those good laps.

"Tell you what, this DEX car is really good, man. We’ve been going really fast in this car - won the St Pete opener with it, won Mid-Ohio and now we're pole at Nashville, which is an amazing racetrack."

Australian series leader Will Power was sixth fastest, but was relegated to eighth, after earning a penalty in the second round of qualifying and losing his fastest time of the session.

McLaughlin has already won twice this year - at St Petersburg, Florida, and Mid-Ohio last month - and currently sits seventh on standings with four races remaining.

Chasing his seventh Indycar crown, Dixon prevailed at Toronto last month - the 18th consecutive year he has won on the circuit - and currently sits fourth in the championship standings.
