NRL: Warriors cult hero 'Roger Shoey Vasa-Sheck' to return to Mt Smart Stadium

A devoted Warriors fan, who believed he had been banned for life, after drinking a beverage out of his shoe to celebrate a try, will return to Mt Smart Stadium.

His threatened ban hasn't stopped him from performing the act, known as a 'shoey', which will now raise money for mental health charity 'I am Hope' during the team's final home game.

His antics, right in front of Warriors coach Stacey Jones, have seen Calley Gibbons become a cult hero of the Warriors' return home to Mt Smart Stadium - and he's going again.

So much so, the 31-year-old Auckland bricklayer has been given the nickname of 'Roger Shoey Vasa-Sheck'.

The act involves using his size 12 shoe as a drinking vessel and always performed in a prime seating position.

"They've been my father's tickets for years, since about 2016, when I started to go," Gibbons said. "My father Rob Gibbons has been a diehard fan of the Warriors since 1995."

The team's clash with Canterbury Bulldogs on Friday provided another occasion to add to his own four-part series.

"The security guard came up to me and said, 'If you drink out of that shoe, you're gone' and about 15 minutes in, the opportunity came up," Gibbons said.

"I looked at the guard, I looked at the big screen, I looked back at the guard and I said, 'It's going to happen'. It was almost like a Spartacus moment, everyone sort of sitting in front of me.

"They were all standing up in front of me, shouting, 'shoey, shoey, shoey'."

But he was then escorted out by the security guard.

"I don't want any negative feedback on him, because at the end of the day, he was doing his job and he was doing a good service," said Gibbons.

"What happened, happened, but the Warriors have been in contact. There's been murmurs going around that I'm welcome back and that's all I want at the end of the day."

So the shoey will also live on for another day, with the stakes raised for their final home game against Gold Coast Titans on September 3.

"We are going to go out with a bang," Gibbons said. "I want to be drinking out of a red band gumboot.

"For every time they get me on screen doing a shoey out of it, i'm going to donate $100 to the 'I am Hope' foundation.

"Mental health has been something that's been quite important to me.

"I had some troubles when I was a bit younger. I had a really good support team.

"I have great family and friends. They helped me through it and I'm one of the lucky ones.

"Some of the kids don't have that support system. It's important you have the counsellors, and just get a group behind them and realise that you can get through it.

"Life is very important. It's something that will bring positivity to a great foundation - I'm happy to be a part of it."

He may have become a Warriors cult hero, but he's a warrior in his own right.
