Rugby league: Former NRL star Corey Norman faces lengthy ban for alleged 'Hopoate' incident in England

Former NRL star Corey Norman faces an eight-week ban from the UK Super League for allegedly trying to give an opponent an unscheduled rectal examination during a match between Toulouse and Warrington.

The act was made infamous by former Wests Tigers winger John Hopoate, who was banned for 12 weeks for "unsportsmanlike interference" on three players in one match.

Norman, 31, has been put on report and faces charges of "inappropriate contact" on Warrington opponent Oliver Holmes.

Last year, NZ-born second-rower Kenny Edwards was suspended for 10 matches for a similar incident against former NZ Kiwis prop Sam Kasiano.

Anything more than four weeks for Norman would see him miss the rest of the season, as his team struggle to stay in the Super League top flight.

The one-game Queensland Origin player had a chequered NRL career spanning more than 200 games with Brisbane Broncos, Parramatta Eels and St George Illawarra.

Last year, he was fined $20,000 and handed a breach notice for his involvement in a street fight that allegedly saw a knife drawn.

Soon after, the Dragons told Norman he would not be retained for the 2022 season, but he was later fined $50,000 and suspended a game as one of the 13 St George players violating COVID-19 protocols at a team party, after they beat NZ Warriors in golden point.

He initially retired at the end of the season, but was lured back to play for Toulouse Olympique.
