Bledisloe Cup: Underfire referee Mathieu Raynal returns to haunt Wallabies at Eden Park

The most despised man in Australian sport will return to haunt the Wallabies in Saturday's Bledisloe Cup rematch at Auckland.

Frenchman Mathieu Raynal - the referee behind the controversial time-wasting call at Melbourne that cost the Wallabies a shot at finally reclaiming the Bledisloe - will man the sidelines at Eden Park, after being appointed an assistant referee.

Ireland's Andrew Brace will oversee the test, with Raynal's compatriot Pieree Brousset on the other touchline and Wales' Ben Whitehouse as TV official.

Brace is relatively inexperienced at international level, refereeing his first elite-level test during last year's Six Nations.

Raynal's decision to punish Aussie first-five Bernard Foley in the final seconds ultimately led to the All Blacks' matchwinning try and has seen him dragged over the coals across the Tasman, with coaches, pundits and fans alike condemning his call.

Wallabies great Tim Horan dubbed the decision "disgraceful", while fellow former Australian representative Peter FitzSimons said it went against the spirit of the game.

Raynal dealt out four yellow cards on an undisciplined night at Marvel Stadium, including one many believed should have been red to Wallabies forward Darcy Swain, whose illegal cleanout at a ruck caused a season-ending injury to All Blacks midfielder Quinn Tupaea.

He was later cited by SANZAAR for foul play and will face a judiciary hearing on Wednesday night, when his fate will be determined.

If the ban is upheld, it would be Swain's second of the season, after he copped a two-week suspension for headbutting opposite Jonny Hill during Australia's first test against England in July.

If the judiciary deems the incident as meeting the mid-range or top-end threshold, which carry starting points of six matches and 10-plus matches respectively, Swain's 2022 season may well be over.

Unbeaten by Australia at Eden Park since 1986, the All Blacks would seal back-to-back Rugby Championship titles, if they beat the Wallabies on Saturday and Argentina can limit South Africa at Durban on Sunday morning (NZ time).
