Kiwi Sam Gaze has won the UCI mountain bike marathon world championship title in Denmark, just one month after breaking his collarbone.

Gaze, 26, held off defending champion Andreas Seewald of Germany in the final stages to claim the rainbow jersey.

He won the race at a time of 4h 15m 51s, with his rival 16 seconds behind in second and Denmark's Simon Andreassen in third.

Gaze was delighted to clinch the win, after crashing out while in the leading group in the mountain bike world championship in France.

"It wasn't the most ideal preparation with broken collarbone and ribs," said the two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist and world short-track champion. "I just wanted to come and right some wrongs from the world champs."

"Andreas was super strong. He came back at me and I thought I was in really big trouble, so it is a dream come true to become world champion again.

"It is going to take some time to digest this win."
