Football superstar David Beckham said he's "truly saddened" by the death of Queen Elizabeth in an emotional and heartfelt message on social media.
The England great was among a multitude of sports personalities across the world to pay their respects online, after the monarch passed away at the age of 96 years on Friday (NZ time).
The former England, Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder met the Queen several times and was appointed an OBE for services to football in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2003.
"I'm truly saddened by the death of Her Majesty, The Queen," wrote Beckham in an Instagram post. "What an outpouring of love and respect we saw for the Platinum Jubilee for her life of service.
"How devastated we all feel today shows what she has meant to people in this country and around the world. How much she inspired us with her leadership. How she comforted us when times were tough.
"Until her last days she served her country with dignity and grace. This year she would have known how loved she was.
"My thoughts and prayers are with our Royal Family."
Former Blackcaps star Chris Cairns spoke of the impression the Queen left on him during his visit to Buckingham Palace during his days as a world-class allrounder.
"The world has lost a remarkable leader today," Cairns said on Instagram.
"I was fortunate enough to be able to meet Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in 1999 during the World Cup. For someone who meets an inordinate amount of people on a daily basis, I was genuinely impressed by how she engaged, made eye contact & smiled.
"An incredible woman who has left an extraordinary legacy."
British Olympic track legend Sir Mo Farah took to Twitter to offer his condolences.
"The Queen was loved all over the world and meant so much to so many," said Sir Mo. "Meeting her was one of the greatest honours of my life.
"We will remember her for her warmth and dedication to the British people throughout her reign."
Heavyweight boxing champion and proud Englishman Tyson Fury made a pair of posts on Twitter to show the Queen his respects.
Brazilian football deity Pelé said he was a "great admirer" Of Queen Elizabeth, whose "legacy will last forever".
