Leaderboard:

1-Davison
2-Heimgartner
3- Waters
5-Van Gisbergen

5:35pm

A great drive from Davison, starting in third but taking the chequered flag.

Don't fret though, motorsport fans - we've got two more races tomorrow!

That'll be all from us this evening. Thanks for joining us, and we'll see you again tomorrow!

5:32pm

And that'll be that. Will Davison drives home to take the victory, but a very honourable second for Andre Heimgartner.

Van Gisbergen has also come up with the fastest lap to end the race, which gives him five more points in his charge to the title.

5:30pm

And van Gisbergen gets past de Pasquale! He moves up into fifth!

It looks like Davison will hold off Heimgartner to take the chequered flag though.

5:29pm

Davison's just put up the fastest lap of the race, and moved his lead to just under 0.6s ahead of Heimgartner.

Van Gisbergen is having trouble getting past De Pasquale.

5:28pm

Heimgartner is half a second back from Davison at the front. Four laps to go!

5:27pm

The safety car is in! Can Heimgartner catch Davison at the front? And what can van Gisbergen do?

5:26pm

We're waiting for the safety car to come in. Six laps to go.

5:22pm

This could play into Heimgartner's hands too. The field has closed up behind the safety car, with only Davison in front of the Kiwi.

5:19pm

Less than 10 laps to go, it looks like we've got a safety car too!

That'll close the field right up, and give van Gisbergen a chance to pull off a late charge on fresher tyres!

5:16pm

Van Gisbergen is up into sixth. Holdsworth has pitted for the first time, so Davison is back into the lead.

Kiwi Heimgartner is second.

5:13pm

Hazlewood pits, moving Davison to second and Heimgartner to third.

Van Gisbergen has gone from ninth to seventh with his new tyres.

5:12pm

And van Gisbergen pits! He comes out down in ninth, with Holdsworth and Hazlewood now into first and second - but yet to stop.

Davison is third, effectively first. Heimgartner fourth.

5:05pm

Waters pits now, so van Gisbergen moves into the outright lead - albeit with a stop to come.

Davison exits the pits in sixth.

5:05pm

Heimgartner and Waters both pit, which moves van Gisbergen into second.

Heimgartner is eighth after he leaves the pits.

5:02pm

The leaders are going in for their first pits, starting with de Pasquale, looking for the undercut.

That moves Heimgartner into third, and van Gisbergen fifth. Mostert pits next, which moves van Gisbergen to fourth.

4:57pm

Davison is starting to pull away at the front of the grid, with his lead over de Pasquale touching two seconds.

Further back, Kiwi Chris Pither is up to 11th place as we go through the first pit stops.

4:53pm

Jake Kostecki has been forced to retire, after a pit stop error ended his race.

Tim Slade and Jack le Broq are also both out.

No change to the leaders, but Mostert is right on Heimgartner's heels.

4:48pm

After five laps, Heimgartner and van Gisbergen are both within a second of the cars in front of them.

Still a long way to go.

Fellow Kiwi Chris Pither is down in 20th.

4:45pm

Van Gisbergen overtakes Pye, and he's moved up one place into sixth place.

4:44pm

And straight away, Davison gets past Waters into first, as de Pasquale does the same!

The pole sitter is now third! Heimgartner has moved up into fourth.

SvG is still down in seventh.

4:43pm

Green flags, and they're off at Pukekohe!

4:40pm

Right, the field is off on its formation lap. Not long to go now!

4:30pm

And we're back for the first race of the weekend! If you missed qualifying earlier, Cam Waters has pole this afternoon, with Kiwi duo Andre Heimgartner and Shane van Gisbergen in fifth and seventh respectively.

The race gets underway in about 10 minutes!

2:44pm

And Waters takes pole! Davison is second, Mostert third, de Pasquale fourth.

Andre Heimgartner is the best placed of the Kiwis in fifth, while van Gisbergen is seventh.

We'll be back later today for the first of the weekend's races, so join us then!

2:42pm

Waters produces a better lap, Mostert challenges him but will settlefor third at best.

Van Gisbergen moves up to sixth, before being dropped to seventh.

2:41pm

Two minutes to go. Mostert goes fastest through sector one, before Waters goes faster.

Heimgartner moves up into third place, but Mostert goes faster to drop him to fourth.

Van Gisbergen is ninth in the final seconds.

2:39pm

The drivers are starting to emerge from the pits for a last couple of laps to end the session.

Davison the man to beat at the moment.

2:37pm

Just over five minutes left. Everyone is back in the pits.

Van Gisbergen is sixth at the moment, but it looks like the threat of rain is becoming more real.

2:35pm

Davison sets the mark early to take top spot, Waters in second place.

Van Gisbergen is yet to record a first lap, Heimgartner is still in the pits.

2:34pm

We're underway in Q3, how can the Kiwi boys get on?

2:30pm

So, the top 10 all advance with 11-20 all out.

We'll be back shortly to see who'll take pole!

2:28pm

Van Gisbergen will finish no higher than eighth, but still advances. Heimgartner takes fifth.

The Aussies dominate the top four.

2:27pm

Davison overtakes Waters for top spot, de Pasquale goes second.

Waters overtakes him into second place though, Heimgartner drops into fourth.

Van Gisbergen has fallen to seventh, and needs a huge lap to go higher, but should still advance.

2:26pm

Less than two minutes left in Q2. Everyone is back on track to push for their place in the next round.

2:22pm

The top four - Waters, Davison, de Pasquale and van Gisbergen - are all back in the pits.

Just for the record, van Gisbergen has only been on pole five times this season, but won 16 races.

Everyone now back in the pits, barring Reynolds.

2:21pm

Broc Feeney takes the early lead, but is very quickly overtaken by Waters, Davison and de Pasquale.

Van Gisbergen and Heimgartner take fourth and fifth, before Percat and Pye move ahead of Heimgartner.

Still more than six minutes to go in this session, though.

2:18pm

And we're back out for Q2 - how can van Gisbergen and Heimgartner continue?

2:12pm

And just like that, two Kiwis take the top two spots.

The top 20 all advance through to the next round, the bottom five are all out.

2:11pm

Into the final minute of the first qualifying session. Kiwi Chris Pither is battling to stay in contnetion, currently 22nd. It looks like he won't advance.

Fellow Kiwi Andre Heimgartner has gone fastest ahead of van Gisbergen.

And that's the end of Q1.

2:08pm

Chaz Mostert goes second fastest behind van Gisbergen. He and Nick Percat are the only two cars out of the top 10 still out on track.

2:06pm

Van Gisbergen and de Pasquale both head for the pits, they should be comfortably through to the next session.

2:05pm

And Shane van Gisbergen goes straight to the top of qualifying after his second and third sectors!

Just over five minutes left in this first round of qualifying.

2:03pm

The first lot of drivers are out on their opening lap.

Cam Waters is currently the quickest through the first sector, but Anton de Pasquale goes fastest through sector two.

1:55pm

Good afternoon! We're almost ready to get underway for qualifying at Pukekohe!

The weather has held for now, but it seems like when, and not if, the heavens open.

Kia ora, good afternoon and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of the Auckland SuperSprint - Supercars' return to New Zealand after a two-year hiatus, due to COVID-19.

Not only is this a welcome comeback for the Aussie championship, this weekend will mark the last time this iconic Pukekohe venue is used for motorsport, with fulltime use for horseracing imminent.

All of this takes place with the backdrop of Queen Elizabeth's death and the feeling that something has shifted in our world...

Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen is defending SuperSprint champion and currently leads the Supercars championship, as he tries to defend his crown.

The South Auckland native has a 500-point lead in the standings, after 16 wins so far this season, including back-to-back victories at Sandown last month and seven of the last eight outings.

"My interest in Supercars started at Pukekohe," says van Gisbergen. "I'd love to go out there with a good result.

"I'm trying not to get too excited, I want to go there and treat it like any other round.

"I'm trying not to get too caught up in the celebrations. I'm pretty excited to go there."

SVG was fourth in Friday practice, behind Anton De Pasquale, Will Davison and fellow Kiwi Andre Heimgartner.

His rivals are running out of opportunities to overhaul him, with the epic Bathurst 1000 looming next month.

Join us at 2pm for qualifying, with the race timed to go at 4:40pm.

'End of an era': Supercars prepares to farewell Pukekohe Park Raceway

By Alex Powell

The clock is ticking closer towards the end of Pukekohe Park Raceway, as Australia's Supercars championship prepares to say goodbye to the iconic Kiwi circuit.

Earlier this year, it was announced Pukekohe would no longer be the home of NZ motorsport, as its operations shift to focus on thoroughbred racing.

Instead, motorsport will move south to Hampton Downs, including the New Zealand leg of the Supercars Championship from 2023.

As a result, this weekend will mark the end of Pukekohe's tenure as a Supercars destination, with three races across Saturday and Sunday serving as a farewell at the Auckland SuperSprint.

With the championship almost entirely held in Australia, the NZ leg gives Kiwi drivers - including Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen, who've won the last four championships - the chance to race at home.

Absent from the Supercars calendar since 2019, due to COVID-19, this weekend will provide the current New Zealanders on the grid a chance to bid the track a fitting farewell.

Among them is Brad Jones Racing's Andre Heimgartner, who sits 10th in the championship and is eyeing his first win of the season at the track where his love affair with motorsport began.

"To see Pukekohe leave is pretty sad," Heimgartner told Newshub. "For me, it's a lot of core memories.

"I learned to drive a manual car there and did my first hotlap there with my dad. I fell in love with Supercars watching Greg Murphy and Mark Skaife race around there from a young age.

"For me, it's a sad one. I think a lot of people have a lot of memories - a lot of Kiwis.

"I raced a lot of categories there over the years, had some good success as well.

"It's going to be a weird feeling, I think. I personally didn't see it coming that the track was going to be taken out.

"Once we finish that last lap on Sunday, I think it might be a bit emotional. Hopefully, though, we can hold the Jason Richards Trophy."

It's not just Supercars' Kiwi contingent sad to see the end of Pukekohe either.

Dick Johnson Racing's Will Davison won at Pukekohe in 2013 and holds fond memories of racing at the fabled circuit.

"It's the end of an era, I suppose," said Davison. "Pukekohe is a circuit rich with history, amazing history.

"The incredible character the circuit's got, there's not many circuits like it anywhere around the world.

"I'm glad I've been able to race here so many times."
