Lap 41/41

1-Van Gisbergen
2-Waters
3-Heimgartner

5:16pm

What a day. What a weekend. What a driver.

Congrats to Shane van Gisbergen AND Andre Heimgartner on their podium finishes.

That's all from us, and that's all from Pukekohe Park Raceway.

Thank you for joining us this weekend, and bring on Hampton Downs 2023!

5:10pm

That's 18 wins this season for van Gisbergen, equal with Scott McLaughlin for the most in a year, and gives him the Jason Richards memorial trophy.

5:08pm

And there it is! Shane van Gisbergen gives Pukekohe the dream send off!

Heimgartner crosses the line in third - so two Kiwis on the podium!

5:07pm

One lap to go! Van Gisbergen should seal this from here!

5:06pm

And van Gisbergen gets his man! The Kiwi overtakes at turn 10 - and Pukekohe goes nuts!

5:05pm

Three laps to go, less than half a second between Waters and van Gisbergen.

5:03pm

Meanwhile, Heimgartner is nicely positioned in third. If Waters and van Gisbergen take each other out, the Kiwi could just steal this!

5:02pm

They're side by side at the corner - and there's contact! Van Gisbergen is forced to back off, and Waters keeps his lead!

5:01pm

Waters locks up in braking - and van Gisbergen pounces! The gap is closed and the Kiwi is in position to pounce!

Waters holds him off for now, but the Aussie is under real pressure now!

5:00pm

Waters' lead is just over 0.6s.

Van Gisbergen's lead over Heimgartner is more than a second. This should be a shootout between Waters and van Gisbergen for the win.

4:57pm

And van Gisbergen goes past Heimgartner! He's got his sights on Waters at the front for the lead - and with less than 10 laps to go, the win.

4:56pm

Mostert pits at the front, as Reynolds takes the lead. Heimgartner and van Gisbergen move into fourth and fifth.

Reynolds pits too, we'll have to wait and see where they come out.

Heimgartner and van Gisbergen move to second and third.

4:54pm

The three leading cars, Mostert, Reynolds and Jones, are all yet to pit.

Of all the cars to have stopped, Heimgartner and van Gisbergen are effectively third and fourth.

4:51pm

Van Gisbergen emerges from the pits in seventh, and is passed by Heimgartner as he emerges.

The Kiwis are now running sixth and seventh.

4:50pm

Davison gets his rear left fixed, but that should be the end of his chances of a second win of the weekend.

Van Gisbergen pits for the first time.

4:49pm

And there's a mistake in the pits for Davison! It looks like one of his rear wheels wasn't secured correctly.

This could cost Davison - big time. He'll need to pit again to get it fixed.

4:47pm

And Davison pits for the first time. That moves van Gisbergen up into first, but he still needs to stop.

Heimgartner has moved up into 11th.

4:46pm

Waters heads for the pits. That'll move van Gisbergen into second, just under four seconds behind Davison.

4:45pm

Heimgartner emerges from the pits in 12th.

4:44pm

De Pasquale in third heads for the pits now, as does Heimgartner.

That moves van Gisbergen up into third, but still to pit himself.

4:43pm

Feeney is headed for the pits, so Heimgartner and van Gisbergen both move up another place each.

4:41pm

At the front, Davison has opened up a lead of more than a second in front of Waters behind him.

Pye has pitted, so Van Gisbergen moves up another place, now sixth.

4:38pm

And van Gisbergen gets past Reynolds! He moves up into seventh, less than a second behind Pye in sixth.

4:37pm

Van Gisbergen has Reynolds in front of him, for now, as he looks for the overtake.

Heimgartner is behind Feeney at present.

4:36pm

Drivers at the back of the grid are taking their first pit stops now, looking to undercut and make ground on the leaders when their turn comes.

No changes at the front.

4:35pm

The safety car is in - and we're racing again!

4:31pm

Hazlewood emerges from the pits, and looks to be driving without any major damage.

4:28pm

We're eight laps in now, and still waiting for the safety car to come in.

4:21pm

Courtney's car is taken from the track, so here's hoping for a quick end to the safety car.

4:19pm

Courtney has passed all of the medical checks.

In more good news, Kiwi Chris Pither moved up two places to 19th amid all the chaos.

4:17pm

Hazlewood has gone into the pits, looking like a suspension issue.

That could be his race done as well.

No changes to the lead (obviously) behind the safety car.

4:15pm

It looks like Hazlewood might be in trouble as well here. Courtney is definitely out.

He's unharmed though.

4:14pm

And they're off! Davison holds off Waters - but James Courtney is in the wall!

That'll be a safety ca right off the bat!

4:10pm

Just a reminder that the final race is only a 24-strong field, after Will Brown suffered terminal damage in race two.

The drivers are off on their formation lap.

4:05pm

We've avoided rain all weekend so far, but we could see a shower for the finale.

Here's hoping for a dry track though!

4:00pm

We've had both national anthems, and a haka to farewell Pukekohe - now just 10 minutes away from the last race.

Kiwi duo Andre Heimgartner and Shane van Gisbergen are fifth and eighth on the grid respectively.

3:50pm

And we're back for this weekend's third race! The teams are going through their final preparations.

Spare a thought for Shane van Gisbergen, Andre Heimgartner and Chris Pither, the three Kiwis about to race at Pukekohe for the final time.

We're 20 minutes from the start.

2:03pm - Van Gisbergen now has the lead in the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy and claims he was struggling with his tyres on the race restart - perhaps a bit of gamesmanship.

He hoped to do a burnout, but has another race this afternoon, when he'll start eighth on the grid. Join us at 4:10pm for live updates.

1:59pm - And there's the victory, which will extend his championship lead, after a disappointing fifth yesterday.

His big move came at the restart, where he held up the field and then closed the gate on Davison's passing attempt, shunting his rival back a few places in the field.

Mostert holds second, Waters third and Davison fourth, with Kiwi Heimgartner sixth, after his podium finish yesterday.

1:58pm - SVG now almost two seconds clear, as he closes in on his 17th win this season. He's just entered the last lap of the shortened race.

1:57pm - Le Brocq is in the garage with suspension damage.

1:55pm - Four laps or two minutes to go now, after the race was shortened. SVG has fastest lap with 1m 03.335s.

1:53pm - Ten laps left and van Gisbergen holding steady in the lead, edging out to 1.5 seconds over Mostert, with Waters, Davison and Pye rounding out the top five.

1:51pm - Brodie Kostecki has lost a door skin on the 29th lap, but that should be easily removed from the side of the track. Kostecki was one of the drivers impacted by De Pasquale on the opening lap.

1:49pm - Heimgartner is in sixth, but hard on Pye's tail. Davison is in fourth.

1:47pm - Holdsworth pits, so van Gisbergen now has the lead by a second from Mostert, as it was before everyone took to the pits. Fourteen laps remaining.

1:46pm - Holdsworth leads from SVG, but probably hasn't pitted yet.

1:44pm - Le Brocq has pitted and van Gisbergen retakes the effective lead.

1:43pm - Courteny has served his five-second penalty. SVG is gunning for fastest lap...

1:40pm - Waters has taken over as fastest lap of the race, but all the leaders have taken their compulsory pitstop. Le Brocq holds the lead for now.

1:39pm - Percat is off the track and Randle has another 15-second time penalty for another infringement - that's a total of 20 seconds.

The race will be shortened by 3-4 laps, after the suspension of racing.

1:37pm - Waters has pitted for a couple of new tyres and re-enters in 17th. Mostert and Davison have also pitted, so Heimgartner is in second, behind SVG.

1:36pm - Hazelwood has a five-second penalty for a driving infringement, but he's back in 15th, so that shouldn't have much bearing on the result.

1:33pm - Heimgartner is up to fifth, with 14 of 41 laps complete.

1:32pm - Van Gisbergen has a one-second lead over Mostert, as some cars pit for tyre changes.

1:31pm - Slade has also left the track and Winterbottom has been penalised a pit drivethrough for nudging Will Brown before his crash.

1:30pm - Heimgartner is up to seventh, after starting 10th on the grid.

1:29pm - Hazelwood has run off the track, but should be able to rejoin with no impact. Feeney has fallen from second on the grid to 10th amid all the chaos.

1:27pm - Courtney and Randle have five-second penalties.

1:26pm - Courtney and Randle are penalised for gaining advantage, but Davison makes a bold move on van Gisbergen that backfires, as he loses places to Mostert and Waters. Well played, SVG.

1:24pm - The safety car is gone and SVG maintains 80kph at the head of the field. He can dictate when racing begins, but he holds up the field until the start of the sixth lap.

SVG takes off, but Davison is right on his bumper.

1:21pm - Will Brown was winded by the impact of his crash and lay down, but has texted his team to say he's OK. De Pasquale is already back in the garage, working with his team on repairs.

The field sets off under safety car, rewarming their tyres for a restart of racing.

1:16pm - Drivers have been given a five-minute call until the restart. A lot of damage to De Pasquale's car and probably won't be ready for the second race this afternoon.

1:02pm - The race has been suspended, with all cars ordered back to the grid for a restart. Pitlane has been "compromised" by Brown's crash, which has shifted the wall.

1pm - Will Brown is also into the gravel, so a couple of things to clear up, as the field continues to circle slowly. De Pasquale seemed to lose steering and bumped a couple of others - Reynolds and Heimgartner - as he headed to the wall.

12:59pm - SVG jumps off the line and leads into the first turn, but Davison takes Feeney in the opening stages and is already pouring pressure on the Kiwi.

De Pasquale loses ground and is into the fence with big damage - his race is over already, as the safety car comes out. That didn't take long.

12:53pm - The grid is set and waiting for the flag to fall...

12:45pm - Welcome back to our coverage of Race 28 of the 2022 Supercars Championship and second at the Auckland SuperSprint event at Pukekohe Park Raceway.

Kiwi championship leader Shane van Gisbergen holds inside running on the starting grid, as he chases his 17th win of the season and 71st of his career.

Forty-one laps makes 119km.

Van Gisbergen's problems began, when he qualified only seventh fastest, leaving him to play catch-up all day. This morning's qualifying sessions are crucial to his chances of restoring a 500-point lead on the table.

Davison wins Supercars' NZ return, Kiwi Heimgartner second at Pukekohe

By Alex Powell

There was no Kiwi fairytale, as the Supercars championship returned to New Zealand, with Australian Will Davison taking the first victory of the final weekend at Pukekohe Park Raceway.

As the Auckland SuperSprint made its return for the first time since 2019, Davison took the chequered flag from second on the grid, while Kiwi Andre Heimgartner took second place, after he started fifth.

"It's bloody awesome, thanks everyone for coming out, I'm glad we finally got a podium on the last Puke weekend," said Heimgartner.

"Pretty awesome here being a Kiwi, growing up on that side of the fence and then be on the podium on this side, it's bloody awesome, so thanks everyone.

"I learnt how to drive a manual car here and had my first hot lap with my dad when I was a kid, so I really wanted to tick this off before the track left. I'm really really glad and hopefully we go one better tomorrow."

Cam Waters finished third to complete the podium, after starting third on the grid.

Davison's win was his Shell V-Power team's second in succession at Pukekohe, with Kiwi Scott McLaughlin the last driver to take victory in New Zealand, before Auckland's absence from the Supercars calendar.

An overtake on Waters at the first turn was all Davison needed, holding off the charge of Heimgartner, after a late safety car for his third victory of the season.

Meanwhile, championship leader Shane van Gisbergen qualified in seventh, but moved up two places to finish fifth.

Van Gisbergen also stole the fastest lap to finish the race, taking his advantage at the top of the championship to 493 points with seven races to go in 2022.

The weekend continues with two more races on Sunday, as Supercars farewells Pukekohe, before moving to Hampton Downs in 2023.
