Motorsport: Shane van Gisbergen not getting carried away as Supercars prepares for Pukekohe farewell

The Kiwi contingent are relishing the chance of a successful send off at Pukekohe Raceway this weekend, as Supercars comes to town before the track closes for good next year.

Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen grew up watching Greg Murphy dominate at the iconic track, and now he and his fellow countrymen are eyeing the chance to chase their own historic victory, one last time.

With a final walk around Pukekohe raceway's hallowed track, the stars of Supercars took it all in. And for the local drivers, it's bound to be an emotional weekend.

"[It's] pretty sad, I think, for me it's a lot of core memories," said Andre Heimgartner.

"[I] learnt to drive a manual car there, did my first hot lap there with my dad, and obviously fell in love with Supercars watching Greg Murphy and Mark Skaife race around there."

"Formula Ford, HQ Holdens, V8 utes - I've raced a bit of everything at Pukekohe," added Chris Pither. "For me, it's where it all started."

While defending champion and hometown favourite van Gisbergen has tasted victory at Pukekohe, he's not getting swept up in the nostalgia surrounding the weekend.

"I don't know, I don't think about that stuff," he told Newshub. "I just do my thing, and treat it like a normal round, and not get caught up in the home round stuff."

But even the steely focused van Gisbergen admits the historic venue holds a special place in his heart.

"It was the early 2000s, obviously, when Greg Murphy was dominating," van Gisbergen remembered.

"It was pretty awesome to come here, be a fan, and one day dream of coming here on the other side of the fence."

That sentiment will be shared not only by the Kiwis, but the entire grid.

"Every lap you do at Pukekohe's a wild experience," said Will Davison. "It's one of those circuits that really gets your attention, it's a real white knuckle ride.

"I won here in 2013, so that's an amazing experience."

Pukekohe is set for one last white knuckle ride, before the chequered flag falls on it's Supercars history
