NPC: Tasman hold off late fightback from Manawatū to snap losing streak

Tasman have held off a late fightback from Manawatū, taking a 36-26 victory in Palmerston North to snap their NPC losing streak on Friday.

Winless in their last three matches, Tasman ran in five tries to Manawatū's four to notch their first victory since the NPC's first round, at the start of August.

In a fast start, returning All Black Leicester Fainga'anuku got the Mako off to the perfect start, slicing through the Turbos' defence to open the scoring, before a penalty to William Havili gave Tasman a 10-0 lead.

A try to fullback Taine Robinson extended the visitors' lead even further at 17-0, before Manawatū hit back, as one-cap All Black Brett Cameron was put into score by Ed Fidow.

Tasman had their third before the break, as winger Macca Springer ran in under the posts off the back of a scrum, but conceded again as hooker Siua Maile barged over from close range.

Up 24-12 at halftime, Springer's second try and another to lock Quentin Strange put Tasman in complete control, holding a 36-12 lead entering the final 10 minutes.

But with victory seemingly out of their reach, Manawatū gave their home fans something to cheer for, as Tima Fainga'anuku matched his younger brother with a try, before replacement Adam Boult scored a late consolation as the clock ran out on the Turbos' comeback.

The win, Tasman's second of the season, moves the Mako into fifth on the NPC's evens conference, with only points differential keeping them from a quarter-final spot, level with North Harbour on points differential.

Manawatū meanwhile remain bottom of the evens conference, with six losses from six to start the season, with a huge -207 points differential.

Tasman 36 (L.Fainga'anuku, Robinson, Springer 2, Strange tries; Havili 4 conversions; Havili penalty) Manawatū 26 (Cameron, Maile, T.Fainga'anuku, Boult tries; Cameron 3 conversions)
