Rugby Sevens: New Zealand men, women safely through to quarter-finals with knockout victories over Scotland, Colombia

New Zealand have taken the first steps towards defending their World Cup Sevens crowns, progressing safely through to the championship quarter-finals at Cape Town.

The All Blacks Sevens have cruised past Scotland 43-5 in their Round of 16 clash, with Amanaki Nicole and Akuila Rokolisoa grabbing two tries each.

The Kiwi men led 24-0 at halftime, conceding a token try to Lee Jones after the restart, before adding three more of their own to complete the rout.

"Very pleased," said captain Sam Dixon. "It's pretty tough coming straight into knockout, but the boys started so well and just kept it on - proud of the effort first up.

"The boys are on fire and we will keep on bringing this energy the next day. Whoever we play, we'll focus on them and bring our best efforts."

The NZ men enter the event off the back of a tournament victory at Los Angeles two weeks ago, when they beat archrivals Fiji in the final.

Victory earns them a showdown with Argentina in the men's quarter-finals, where France face Australia, Samoa take on Fiji and Ireland play South Africa on Sunday morning (NZ time).

The NZ women were even more convincing in their win over Colombia, with Risi Pouri-Lane and Kelly Brazier grabbing try doubles.

The Black Ferns Sevens led 26-0 at halftime and, like their male counterparts, allowed a try after the break, before continuing their pointscoring onslaught.

"I love being able to play as many countries as we can and it's awesome for Colombia to be here," said NZ captain Sarah Hirini, playing in her 50th tournament.

The Kiwi women now take on Ireland in their championship quarter-final, with Australia facing England, USA playing Canada and France against Fiji.
