Cricket: Blackcaps star Daryl Mitchell in doubt for World Cup after breaking hand, ruled out of tri-series

The Blackcaps could be without star batter Daryl Mitchell for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup in Australia, after he fractured his right hand in training on Friday.

Mitchell will have to be in a cast for at least the two weeks, and has been ruled out of the T20 tri-series against Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Blackcaps coach Gary Stead reveals he won't rush into making a decision over his star all-rounder's spot in the squad for the knockout tournament.

"It's a real shame for Daryl to suffer this injury on the eve of an exciting period of cricket for the side," Stead said.

"Daryl's become a really important player to our T20 unit and we're certainly going to miss his all-round skills and versatility in the Tri-Series.

"With our first game of the World Cup in just over two weeks we need to take some time to consider Daryl's recovery timeline and his potential involvement in the tournament."

The Blackcaps are yet to name Mitchell's replacement for the tri-series, with their opening game against Pakistan at Hagley Oval on Saturday.
