A female spectator was taken to hospital in Christchurch, after copping a six to the face during the Blackcaps' eight-wicket T20 victory over Bangladesh.
As the home team closed in on victory at Hagley Oval, middle-order batter Glenn Phillips dispatched the ball over the fence to bring New Zealand within two runs of their target, but play was held up several minutes, as medical staff attended the 12-year-old girl on the bank.
Phillips sent the next delivery over the bowler's head for another six to end the contest, then sprinted to the boundary to check on his unintended victim.
The Blackcaps later tweeted: "The 12-year-old girl who was struck by the ball at Hagley Oval tonight was lucid and able to sit up, as she was assessed by doctors at the ground.
"She has since been taken to hospital for further checks."
NZ spin bowler Ish Sodhi expressed his concern afterwards.
"We've seen it a few times now, but it's so hard to manage. You almost have to have a barrier up in certain areas, where children and people who are vulnerable can sit and be safe.
"GP hits the ball really hard, but the young girl that was struck, thankfully at the moment, is doing all right, which is great to see.
"GP was obviously showing his concern out there...I think she's in the best hands at the moment."
