Kiwi motorsport icon Greg Murphy has bettered his Bathurst personal best, registering a faster time than his famous 'Lap of the Gods' during Thursday's practice session.
Murphy, 50, is getting back behind the wheel for Sunday's great race, teaming up with compatriot Richie Stanaway with Erebus Motorsport as a wildcard.
And hitting the Mount Panorama track for the first time since 2014 on Thursday, the four-time Bathurst champion wound back the clock.
In 2003, Murphy's career-best lap time of 2m 6.8594s went down in Bathurst folklore, dubbed the 'Lap of the Gods' as the first time any driver clocked a time under 2.7s.
And while the record has been broken multiple times since, with Chas Mostert clocking 2m 3.373s in 2021, Murphy, the Kiwi's display years after his competitive retirement was one for the fans.
"Oh my goodness gracious," said Murphy. "I'm enjoying it a little bit too much, actually.
"I keep training the brain to do things a bit differently. It's just how good these things are under brakes."
In the day's second practice session, Murphy put in a best lap time of 2m 5.8716s, beating his former record.
However, the time was only good enough for 22nd place on the grid, as fellow veteran, 45-year-old Garth Tander, topped the practice times with 2m 4.135s.
Teams return to the track on Friday for two more practice sessions, before qualifying for Sunday's great race.
