Rugby: All Blacks centre Rieko Ioane extends stay with NZ Rugby until end of 2023

All Blacks midfielder Rieko Ioane has recommited to NZ Rugby until the end of the 2023 season.

Ioane, 25, will remain with the Blues for next year's Super Rugby Pacific and should be a lock for selection for the All Blacks' Rugby World Cup campaign in France.

The wing-turned-centre was at the forefront of the Blues' success last season, when his stellar form helped them to a spot in the final.

He carried that performance into the test arena, where he cemented his claim on the No.13 jersey, with some game-breaking performances during the Rugby Championship.

"I'm really excited to be signing through until 2023," said Ioane. "My time with the Blues has been awesome.

"I love the turnaround we’ve had and I’m keen to continue building on what we have done as a team.

"With the All Blacks, I feel as though we have started something special. I'm looking forward to a huge northern tour and putting in the work to get us in good shape for next year."

The former World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year has now racked up 32 tries in 56 test appearances, since his debut as a teenager against Italy during the 2016 European tour.

Head coach Ian Foster has seen immense growth in Ioane during his time with the All Blacks, both on and off the field.

"Rieko is a young man with a massive amount of international experience," said Foster. "To have his commitment through until the end of the World Cup is pleasing for us - and hopefully, for longer after that."

Blues coach Leon MacDonald echoes those sentiments and expects Ioane to play another vital part in his team's campaign next season.

"He is a leader on and off the field, and is now in a position to pass on his knowledge and experience to our younger squad members," said MacDonald. "We are looking forward to him continuing to be a world-class centre for the club."
