Blackcaps coach Gary Stead revealed Williamson's appointment doesn't involve his historic elbow problems

New Zealand fell to a 65-run defeat in the second T20 on Sunday, and need to win the final game to at least draw the series, with the opener rained out.

"Kane's been trying to get this booked in for a while now, but unfortunately it hasn't been able to fit into our schedule," he said.

"The health and well-being of our players and staff is paramount, and we look forward to seeing him in Auckland."

Auckland batter Mark Chapman has been called up to the T20 squad in Williamson's absence.

"He's a quality player who offers good versatility in the order," Stead said.

Blackcaps veteran fast bowler Tim Southee will captain NZ in the third and final T20 at McLean Park on Tuesday.
