The Blackcaps can't lose their one-day international series against India, after the second game was washed out at Hamilton.
Leading 1-0, New Zealand can't lose, with a worst-case scenario being a 1-1 draw with one match left to play.
In close to six hours, just 12.5 overs were bowled at Seddon Park, as persistent rain over Hamilton wiped out any chance of a result between the two sides.
After India playing out nearly five overs, rain arrived at 22/0 and kept both sets of players off the field for long enough to reduce the match to a 29-over affair.
Mother Nature wasn't finished, as rain returned after the resumption, with India at 89/1 from 12.5 overs.
Matt Henry took the only wicket of the match, when he had India captain Shikhar Dhawan caught at mid-on by Lockie Ferguson for three.
Suryakumar Yadav joined Shubman Gill in the middle and the pair added an unbeaten stand of 66 runs in only 46 balls, before rain ultimately decided no further play was possible.
"It's disappointing for the teams, it's disappointing for the fans as well - they don't get a chance to see two high quality sides going hard at it," said Blackcaps coach Gary Stead after the match was abandoned.
"The series result will be what it will be but for us, it's about just trying to get on the park and play the cricket."
The washout means the Blackcaps' 1-0 series lead - earned in an emphatic seven-wicket victory at Eden Park on Friday - becomes unassailable, as the hosts have the chance to wrap up victory, when both sides meet again at Christchurch on Wednesday.
