Cricket: Blackcaps prepare for final home hitout before eight week home international drought

With just one game left before an unusual summer schedule of playing away over Christmas, the Blackcaps are hopeful of giving fans some final enjoyment before a two-month hiatus.

But regardless of where their summer of cricket takes them, it's one that's filled up with one day cricket, as New Zealand plot their path to next year's World Cup.

The Blackcaps had a smattering of fans in Christchurch, keen to catch a final glimpse of training before the team head offshore.

After Wednesday's final ODI against India they head to Pakistan for a five-match tour over the holiday period.

"As fans and players, we're used to playing over that Christmas and New Year period, and have done for a long period of time," said Tim Southee.

"So it will be unusual not to have cricket over that period."

Just as unusual for the Blackcaps is the smattering of one day cricket on the horizon.

After two years of predominantly Twenty20s, the 50 over format has filled up the calendar in a crucial 11 months for the side, building towards the World Cup in India next October.

"It's a format that really suits us, and there's plenty of games leading into that World Cup," added Southee.

And this current series against India is an important one in ensuring they begin to find both form and consistency in the format.

Friday's impressive seven wicket win at Eden Park showed their class, but the more traditional Hagley Oval dimensions present another challenge altogether.

"Hagley is a different pitch again," said bowling coach Shane Jurgensen. "That's the key for us, making sure we adapt to the situation or the game that we have here."

Adapting in New Zealand hasn't been an issue for the Blackcaps of late, unbeaten in ODIs at home since February 2019.

"It's nice when you have a record at home that's strong," added Southee. "But our focus doesn't change too much.

"We come to training today to make sure we're as prepared as possible."

Because that record will count for little against an Indian side keen to square the series on Wednesday.
