Rugby League World Cup: Kiwi Ferns take inspiration from Black Ferns' success for semi-final against England

The Kiwi Ferns are drawing inspiration from the Black Ferns, as they prepare for their Rugby League World Cup semi final against England on Tuesday morning (NZ time).

Coach Ricky Henry has named his strongest possible 17 for the clash, as the side look to match their union counterparts.

They may be thousands of kilometres from home, but the Kiwi Ferns are feeling the impact of the Black Ferns' Rugby World Cup triumph.

"It's chilling," said Kiwi Ferns star Georgia Hale. "We had a bit of a watch party in the teamroom, which was pretty cool, just to get behind the team.

"Even though we weren't in the stands at Eden Park, it was just nice to support from afar."

Watching their rugby counterparts make history at home has added extra fuel to the fire for the team to stamp their own mark.

"We're just proud to be here, and represent our families and our nation, and the Black Ferns already did such a stellar job… we just aim to do the same."

Beyond simply wanting to put her own code on the map, Hale can feel the momentum growing for women's sport generally and wants her side to be a part of it.

"Just being a female footy player, seeing the girls do it back home and that we can fly the flag back here," said Hale. "We're just very proud Kiwi women."

A clash against England lies between them and a World Cup final, just four days after their narrow defeat to Australia.

The Kiwi Ferns are under no illusions how this assignment is coming up against the host nation with such tight turnarounds will be a brutal test for both teams.
