The Blackcaps have lost the toss and will bowl first in the opening test against Pakistan in Karachi, starting on Boxing Day.
The Blackcaps bowlers ensured their side got off to a superb start, snaring four wickets in the opening session to reduce Pakistan to 115/4.
Michael Bracewell nabbed two, while Ajaz Patel and Tim Southee took one apiece.
Patel, Ish Sodhi and Bracewell were named in the NZ XI, as they look to take advantage of the spin-friendly conditions on the subcontinent.
Sodhi is playing his first test since 2018, when the Blackcaps got the better of the same opponent in Dubai.
Southee makes his debut as the Blackcaps' new test captain, replacing Kane Williamson, who decided to step down from the role earlier this month.
Southee combines with Neil Wagner as the Blackcaps' pace bowling options.
The Blackcaps are playing their first test in Pakistan since 2003. They've won the last three series against the two teams - twice in New Zealand (2016 and 2020) and once in the UAE in 2018.
The Blackcaps will try to win their first test series on Pakistan soil since 1969.
