Football World Cup: Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez explains controversial post-match gesture

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has explained his post-match antics following his side's Football World Cup victory, after making a vulgar gesture.

Martinez, 30, was named as the World Cup's golden glove winner, awarded to the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

However, after accepting his prize, Martinez held the trophy over his groin and motioned in a crude manner.

Speaking for the first time since Argentina's victory, though, Martinez said the gesture was aimed at French supporters, who had booed him during Monday's (NZ time) final.

"I did it because the French booed me. Pride does not work with me," Martinez told radio station La Red.

Martinez kept three clean sheets at the 2022 World Cup, tied with England's Jordan Pickford and Yassine Bounou of Morocco.

However, rather than be awarded to the most prolific goalkeeper, Martinez was awarded the golden glove after a vote from a panel of experts appointed by FIFA.

The Argentina stopper also proved to be his country's hero in not one, but two penalty shootouts.

Martinez saved two spot kicks as Argentina defeated the Netherlands in the quarter-final, as his side advanced with a 4-3 shootout victory.

Then, in Monday's final, Martinez saved a crucial penalty against France's Kinglsey Coman, before a separate attempt from Aurelien Tchouameni missed the target.

Aside from Martinez, teammate Enzo Fernandez was named as the best young player of the tournament, while Lionel Messi was awarded the golden ball for the best player in Qatar.
