Former England cricketer Andrew Flintoff has been taken to a hospital after an accident during the filming of an episode of BBC's Top Gear show, Sky News reported on Wednesday (NZ time).

"Freddie (Flintoff) was injured in an accident at the Top Gear test track this morning - with crew medics attending the scene immediately," a BBC spokesperson told Sky News.

"He has been taken to hospital for further treatment and we will confirm more details in due course."

His injuries are "not life-threatening" and he is receiving treatment, reports add.

According to the UK's The Sun, the 45-year-old was behind the wheel at the time and medics rushed to help before he was airlifted to hospital.

The paper said he was "driving on the track as normal" and was not going at high speeds.

Flintoff had a hugely successful international career, playing 79 tests and 141 one-day internationals for England, establishing himself as one of the great allrounders.

After retiring from cricket in 2010, he transitioned to a career in television, becoming a host on Top Gear and Australian Ninja Warrior.
