The man who died at Muriwai Beach on Saturday has been named as national-level ice hockey player Dale Harrop of Auckland.
The New Zealand Ice Blacks paid tribute to Harrop on Facebook on Monday saying he will be sorely and whole-heartedly missed.
"The New Zealand ice hockey community mourns the loss of one of our greatest, Dale Harrop," the post said.
Harrop started his ice hockey career for the Canterbury Red Devils in 2006, and will be remembered for his "infectious smile and gregarious personality", the tribute said.
Harrop was an active member of the Ice Black since 2007 and represented New Zealand at 10 World Championships.
"A formidable force on and off the ice for the West Auckland Admirals, Dale will be sorely, whole-heartedly missed by his fellow teammates - both from Auckland and anyone around New Zealand who has been lucky enough to play with this charismatic athlete," the Ice Blacks said.
"Dale, you will be remembered on our ice. The example you set will be followed. Your memory will live on through our sport. Rest in peace, forever our teammate."
A Givealittle page has been set up to support his family and has raised more than $12,000 (at the time of writing).
