Blackcaps batsman Will Young's bid to play in the series opener against England have taken a hit, after failing to impress in a warmup match against the tourists at Seddon Park.
Young was named in coach Gary Stead's 14-man squad but hasn't helped his cause to make the test XI after being dismissed for just 28 runs for the NZ invitational side.
After an encouraging start, which included four boundaries, including a six, he was stumped off the bowling of English spinner Jack Leach.
Instead, it was Auckland's Quinn Sunde who starred with the bat, despite having never played a game of first-class cricket.
The 22-year-old struck an imposing 91 runs off 128 balls, finding the boundary rope on 15 occasions.
He looked to set to reach a remarkable century before he edged fast bowler Olly Stone to Joe Root at first slip.
There were also promising signs with the bat from fellow youngster Jacob Cumming, with the opener making 48 runs.
Robert O'Donnell (34), Tom Bruce (40), and Sean Solia (25) all made good starts to their innings, before falling to the experienced English attack.
The NZ XI were bowled out for 310 runs, after England's first innings score of 465, with the warmup resulting in a draw.
The first day/night test between the Blackcaps and England gets underway at Mount Maunganui on Thursday.
