Blackcaps v Sri Lanka: Rookies Chad Bowes, Ben Lister eye one-day debuts as frontliners look offshore

Newcomers Chad Bowes and Ben Lister are in line for one-day international debuts, when New Zealand face Sri Lanka in a three-match series this month.

Tom Latham will lead a Blackcaps roster decimated by Indian Premier League commitments, with frontliners Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, Devon Conway, Mitch Santner, Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson and Glenn Phillips all departing for the subcontinent before or during the series.

As a result, the national selectors have had to dig deep into their reserves, with Bowes and Lister the biggest beneficiaries.

Batter Bowes helped Canterbury to the Super Smash T20 domestic crown this summer and scored 126 off 108 balls in his most recent Ford Trophy one-day outing. He will join the Blackcaps for the start of the series.

Lister made his T20 international debut against India last month and is considered New Zealand's next outstanding fast-bowling prospect.

"It's always exciting, as a coach, to have new players in the environment and to have players putting their hands up to be selected again in a particular format," said Blackcaps coach Gary Stead.

"Chad has been impressive for a number of seasons at the top of the order for Canterbury, as well as being an excellent fielder.

"Ben's had a challenging time in the past 6-7 months, but he's back fit again and we are really excited by the point of difference he brings to the bowling group."

Test players Tom Blundell and Will Young will also return to the national white-ball set-up.

"We are set to play 16 white-ball matches between now and the start of May, so there will be a number of chances for players to test themselves in familiar and unfamiliar conditions," said Stead.

"Tom Blundell, in particular, is someone who we've been hugely impressed by in international cricket over the past 18 months, as a leader in the test team and then domestically with the Wellington Firebirds."

The series begins March 25 at Auckland's Eden Park.
