Cricket: Blackcaps to play maiden Twenty20 series against United Arab Emirates in August

The Blackcaps will face the UAE in a bilateral series for the first time later this year, with three Twenty20 Internationals in August.

Played in the UAE, the series will be played as a stopover before the Blackcaps' whiteball tour of England later that month.

The Blackcaps have faced the UAE on one previous occasion, coming with a 109-run victory in Faisalabad at the 1996 World Cup.

On that occasion, half-centuries to Roger Twose (92) and Craig Spearman (78) saw New Zealand post 276/8, before 3/20 with the ball from Shane Thomson restricted the UAE to 167/9 in reply.

NZ Cricket chief executive David White hailed the series, seeing the Blackcaps play top tier opposition to an associate, non-test playing nation.

"In terms of the global cricket family, it's important we keep helping each other, and growing the game on an international scale," said White.

"NZC has a close relationship with the Emirates Cricket Board and our players are very familiar with the environment.

"I know the Blackcaps will be looking forward to testing themselves against a competitive UAE team."

Venues are still to be confirmed for the three T20s, but will be played on August 17, 19 and 20.

The tour comes before the Blackcaps face England away from home at the end of August, scheduled for five T20s and four One Day Internationals.
