All-rounder Doug Bracewell has been recalled into the Blackcaps' test squad, for next week's series finale against Sri Lanka at Wellington's Basin Reserve.
Bracewell hasn't played a test for New Zealand since August 2016, but reinforces the Blackcaps' desperately thin bowling stocks, in the unavailability of Kyle Jamieson and Trent Boult.
His call-up comes after Neil Wagner was ruled out of the fourth day of the Blackcaps' first test against Sri Lanka at Christchurch's Hagley Oval, after picking up a knee injury at the end of day three.
So far this season, Bracewell has taken 23 wickets in the Plunket Shield for Central Districts at an average of just over 20, to go with 225 runs at just over 28.
The 32-year-old was in line to be called up for last month's two test series against England, but was ruled out with a groin strain.
"Doug is a skilful bowler who has been in strong form for the Central Stags across formats this season," said coach Gary Stead.
"We believe his skills will complement the rest of the bowlers we have in the group going into the next Test."
Bracewell has played 27 tests for the Blackcaps, taking 72 wickets at an average of 38.83, and best figures of 6/40 to bowl New Zealand to victory against Australia at Hobart in 2011.
Elsewhere, Will Young has been released from the Blackcaps' squad in order to play for Central Districts against Canterbury.
Beginning on Monday, the fixture will allow Young vital match practice, in order to push for a spot in the Blackcaps' XI for the second test.
Young will likely vye with Henry Nicholls for the No.4 spot in Wellington, with the incumbent currently struggling for runs in the Blackcaps' middle order.
Since making 105 against South Africa at the start of 2022, Nicholls is yet to pass 50 again in test cricket, with his highest score since being 39.
In the first innings of the current test against Sri Lanka, Nicholls made just two runs before he was out, caught attempting to pull.
Young came into the Blackcaps' XI for the dramatic victory over England at the Basin Reserve, dropping Nicholls to No.5 in the batting order, but made way in Christchurch for New Zealand to play an extra bowler.
After the first three days against Sri Lanka are 83/3 in their second innings, with a 65-run lead over the Blackcaps.
