After both completing pool play unbeaten, New Zealand's teams suffered contrasting fortunes as they bid to reach the last four.
Up first, the Black Ferns hung on for a win that broke local hearts, defeating hosts Canada 10-5.
Tries in the first half to Portia Woodman-Wickliffe and Michaela Blyde gave New Zealand a 10-0 lead, but the World Series leaders weren't able to add to their score in the second spell.
Canada's Keyara Wardley scored after the break to give Canada hope, but the Black Ferns Sevens' class showed to advance to the semi-final.
The Black Ferns Sevens will meet France in the semi-final, while Australia and USA contest the other last four match-up.
Meanwhile, the All Blacks Sevens' ambition for back-to-back tournament victories came to an end in a trans-Tasman clash, as Australia outclassed New Zealand 17-7.
After falling 5-0 down, as Australia opened the scoring through Henry Paterson, Ngarohi McGarvey-Black scored and converted to put the All Blacks Sevens 7-5 ahead.
That was as good as it got for the Kiwis though.
Australia's Darby Lancaster scored to restore Australia's lead, before Henry Paterson completed the victory in the final moments, as the All Blacks Sevens' title chances ended.
The All Blacks Sevens will face Great Britain on Monday as they play for fifth place, while Australia face France in the semi-final.
