Super Rugby Pacific: Aaron Mauger remains optimistic despite Moana Pasifika's winless start

Moana Pasifika coach Aaron Mauger knows a win is just around the corner, despite coming up short in their first five games of the Super Rugby Pacific season.

Saturday's 59-0 result to the Hurricanes at Mt Smart Stadium was their biggest defeat so far, failing to score any points.

While it was an off-night on attack, having found the tryline with relative ease this season, it's their defence that continues to haunt them.

The Hurricanes ran in nine tries, with Moana Pasifika letting in five five-pointers in the last 20 minutes of the fixture.

But despite the rout, Mauger is remaining optimistic, and believes they're not far off from claiming a much-needed win.

"When we came forward, we looked good, but credit to them, they were too good for us around the collision tonight," he told Sky Sport post-match.

"Our set piece has been pretty good, up until tonight and at a couple of key moments down there the lineout got the wobble and missed a couple of scrum opportunities.

"Once again, you can't take anything away from the Hurricanes, they were good in those areas, probably more variation around our attack down here.

"We were one-dimensional at times, we could've pulled the trigger out of the back and exposed the Hurricanes, but they were good, they were tenacious and they deserved the win and the scoreline.

"There are lots to like about our game as well, we've put the best teams in the competition under pressure.

"I know we will win some games this year, it's just a matter of time and tonight wasn't one of our nights, but we'll pick the boys up and have a good crack at the Highlanders next week."

While Moana Pasifika chase their first win of the 2023 campaign, results off the field are there for all to see.

Loose forward Miracle Faiʻilagi's ascent from World Rugby's pathway program to Super Rugby regular is just one of those examples.

"There's so much talent in the islands, and Miracle is just one example, so it's awesome we can create the pathway for somebody to come here," Mauger told Sky Sport post-match.

"Now it's tangible for young Samoan, Tongan, and Cook Island boys back on the islands, that they can come and play Super Rugby.

"He's a great learner, he's really engaged and he's getting better and better every week, so we're really proud of him."
