Football World Cup: NZ women embrace coloured shorts in newlook playing kit for home tournament

The Football Ferns will move away from their traditional white shorts in a newlook playing strip for the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia this year.

NZ Football and Nike have unveiled a uniform that sees a white shirt paired with teal-blue shorts, while the alternate black strip features a striking handmade Silver Fern pattern, created using a spray paint technique.

The change in colour is part of a global move away from white shorts for women to avoid period anxiety.

"The new jersey is epic, it’s just epic," said Football Ferns centurion Hannah Wilkinson. "I also really, really love the fact that we have colour in our jerseys, which is a little bit different.

"That blue colour is an amazing change and, even better, the absence of white shorts now is fantastic for women with any kind of period anxiety. It's always been something that women athletes - not just footballers - have had to deal with.

"In the end, it just helps us focus more on performance, and shows a recognition and appreciation of women’s health."

The design will also feature Nike Leak Protection, a period innovation integrated into the shorts.

The new strip will be used for the first time in friendlies against Iceland and Nigeria this month.

Significantly, the NZ women have not worn a white strip in their five international fixtures so far this year.

"As an organisation, NZ Football wholeheartedly supports the shift away from white shorts for our women international players," said chief executive Andrew Pragnell.

"The kits pay homage to the sporting heritage of Aotearoa, with the white shirt holding a special place in our football traditions and the black being synonymous with New Zealand sport.

"We can’t wait to see our Ferns wear these kits."

The shirts will go on sale in women's and men's cuts from April 5.
