Super Rugby Pacific: Blues run rampant in second half to blow away Rebels at Melbourne

A stunning second-half showing as seen the Blues blow away the Melbourne Rebels 54-17 in their Super Rugby Pacific clash at AAMI Park.

After a horrid first half, which saw star winger Mark Telea shown a yellow card, and trailing at the break, the Kiwi side responded in sensational fashion.

Despite leaving many points on the field off of the kicking tee, the Blues ran in seven second-half tries to stun the Rebels.

The home team opened the scoring through the reliable boot of Wallabies playmaker Reece Hodge, after Blues hooker Ricky Riccitelli was penalised at the breakdown.

But the Blues hit back immediately, but instead found the tryline, after Andrew Kellaway's kick was charged down in back play.

Winger Caleb Clarke ran onto the loose ball, bumping off a couple of would-be-tacklers, before lock Sam Darry crashed over.

The Blues continued to pile the pressure on, but the Rebels turned defence into attack in the blink of an eye, taking the ball from their own tryline to the other.

Kellaway spotted the break in the Blues' defence, threw the dummy and dived low to evade his opposite and score his team's first try.

However, the set piece proved difficult for the Rebels, with an overthrown lineout resulting in a penalty, and Beauden Barrett knocking over the easy three-pointer.

With their tails up the lineout, the Blues looked to march their maul towards the tryline, before Riccitelli broke away to crash over.

Just as it looked as if they had pulled the game back in their favour, Telea was shown a yellow card for making contact with the player's head.

The Rebels made the numerical advantage count, with Brad Wilkin going over for the try following a lineout drive and the 17-13 halftime lead.

Whatever Blues coach Leon MacDonald told his players at the break looked to have an immediate impact, with his side going on to score 41 unanswered points.

Halfback Finlay Christie was the first to cross, before Telea more than made up for his earlier indiscretion with a fine five-pointer just minutes later.

Christie was then in again after a strong Blues' shove at the scrum, before Telea followed suit to grab his second with Barrett finding him with a brilliant kick-through.

Replacement prop Ofa Tuungafasi then got in on the action by crashing over after a promising run by loose forward Anton Segner.

But even with just minutes remaining, the Blues weren't done, with Zarn Sullivan and captain Dalton Papal'i both crossing to put a cap on a memorable win.

Blues 54 (Christie 2, Telea 2, Darry, Riccitelli, Tuungafasi, Sullivan, Papali'i, tries; Barrett 3 con,1 con) Rebels 17 (Kellaway, Wilkin tries; Hodge 2 con, 1 pen)
