Kiwi swim phenom Erika Fairweather has clinched world championships qualification by twice smashing her own 200m freestyle national record at the national championships in Auckland.
Fairweather, 19, broke her own mark by more than a second during her qualifying heat, then went even faster in the finals, clocking 1m 55.44s - the fourth-fastest time recorded in the world this year.
"I'm absolutely stoked," Fairweather said. "That felt a bit rougher than this morning, but that was to be expected.
"The puzzle pieces seem to be finally fitting together and I’m bringing out some massive swims which feels great.
"It gave me a bit of a surprise. It was more than a second PB [personal best] and I'd just done a PB a few weeks ago, so I wasn't expecting that, but it was really awesome."
Fairweather will also compete in her favoured 400m freestyle, where she'll look to become just the fifth woman in history to break the four-minute mark.
Andrew Jeffcoat also qualified for the world champs in the 100m backstroke (53.73s), as did Cameron Gray in the 50m butterfly (23.27s).
The world championships will be held at Fukuoka, Japan in July.
