Cricket: Kiwi-born Logan van Beek blasts recordbreaking Super Over to help Dutch upset West Indies

NZ-born batter Logan van Beek's recordbreaking exploits have powered the Netherlands to a famous one-day international win over the West Indies in the World Cup qualifying tournament at Harare.

The West Indies posted 374/6 in their 50 overs, but a superb 111 from 76 balls by Dutch batsman Teja Nidamanuru - an Aucklander who plays club cricket for Cornwall - allowed the Dutch to tie the game and set up a Super Over.

That brought Wellington Firebird van Beek to the crease, where he slammed 30 runs from six Jason Holder deliveries in a jaw-dropping display of power hitting.

Earlier, his quickfire 28 helped the Dutch fight back from the brink of defeat to force the highest scoring tie in ODI history. The former NZ U19 representative blasted Holder for six consecutive boundaries, including three sixes to set a record for highest individual score in a Super Over.

Van Beek continued his heroics by taking both West Indies wickets, as they wilted under the pressure to post just eight runs in five balls.

"I do not really know, I cannot really explain it at the moment," van Beek said, after receiving his Player of the Match award. "We wanted to do something special.

"I just backed my skill - if you miss, I am going to hit it."

After already losing to Zimbabwe, the Windies now face an uphill battle to qualify for the World Cup.

The two-time winners have appeared at every tournament since it was first staged in 1975, but with only the top two teams from the Super Sixes qualifying for the main event, their chances now appear slim. They must win all three of their remaining games to stand a chance of reaching the tournament in India, which starts in October.

The Dutch also advance to the Super Sixes from Group A, while the three confirmed teams from Group B are Sri Lanka, Scotland and Oman.
