English football referee Anthony Taylor and his family have been subjected to a torrent of abuse from angry Roma fans, after he officiated their team's Europa league final defeat to Sevilla in Hungary.
The incident follows Roma coach Jose Mourinho's post-match confrontation with Taylor in the Puskas Arena carpark, when he was heard calling the referee a "f**king disgrace" for his "bulls**t decisions".
Roma lost the final 4-1 on penalties, after a late own goal forced extra time and kept Sevilla in the match.
More than 100 supporters of the Italian Serie A side swarmed on Taylor and his family at Budapest Airport in chaotic scenes.
Security staff struggled to keep a barrier between the referee, his family and Roma fans, who swore and threw items, including a chair.
Disturbing footage posted on social media shows groups chanting angrily in his direction, forcing police officers to hurriedly usher him and his family - who were visibly distressed - into a private room.
The person who threw the chair was reportedly taken into custody by local police.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) - the organisation responsible for refereeing in the UK - described the incident as "unjustified and abhorrent".
"We are appalled at the unjustified and abhorrent abuse directed at Anthony and his family, as he tries to make his way home from refereeing the UEFA Europa League final.
"We will continue to provide our full support to Anthony and his family."
Taylor oversaw a heated final, dishing out a combined 13 yellow cards to Roma and Sevilla players, the most ever shown in one Europa League tie.
He also made several contentious calls, including the decision not to send off Sevilla player Erik Lamela for a second yellow card, before he scored in the penalty shootout.
Roma also believe they should have been awarded a penalty for a handball. Taylor waved the appeal away immediately, without reviewing it on the pitchside monitor.
"Next year, we won't be playing the Champions League and that's a good thing, because we're not made for it,' Mourinho said.
"Let's hope that Taylor only officiates games in the Champions League and does the same bull***t there that he did tonight, not in the Europa League."
