Football World Cup: Coach Jitka Klimkova unveils Football Ferns squad for home tournament

Ten Football Ferns players will make their Women's World Cup debuts, as part of a 23-strong squad to contest the tournament on home soil next month.

After an exhaustive process, coach Jitka Klimkova has made the final cuts to her 33-player extended squad, before New Zealand take on Norway in the World Cup opener at Auckland's Eden Park on July 20.

The roster features a mix of experience and youth, with Elizabeth Anton, Claudia Bunge, teenager Milly Clegg, Michaela Foster, Jacqui Hand, Grace Jale, Anna Leat, Gabi Rennie, Indiah-Paige Riley and Malia Steinmetz all named for their first World Cup appearance.

Defender Foster is the daughter of All Blacks coach Ian Foster.

New Zealand have attended five previous tournament offshore, without ever winning a game or progressing past poolplay.

This current squad includes veterans of those campaigns, including most-capped Football Fern Ria Percival in her fifth World Cup, and fellow centurions Ali Riley, Betsy Hassett, Annalie Longo and Hannah Wilkinson.

"I have absolute faith they will give everything for our team and the country come July," said Klimkova.

"I believe we have selected a good balance of youth and experience across the squad, from the 10 players making their debuts to other members of the group who have appeared at multiple FIFA Women’s World Cups.

"With the extra motivation and excitement surrounding the event on home soil, we now need the country to get behind the team, as we look to inspire our nation and deliver one of our best-ever performances at a FIFA Women’s World Cup."

Their first challenge will be turning around a 10-game winless streak that extends back to last September, when they beat pool rivals Philippines 2-1 in California. Since then, they have been outscored 25-2.

New Zealand face Vietnam in their final warm-up game on July 10 at Napier.
