NRL: NZ Warriors enforcer Marata Niukore relishes role as club's 'Mr Fix-It' on successful return to Aotearoa

Six months into his NZ Warriors career, Marata Niukore is relishing his role as coach Andrew Webster's 'Jack of all trades'.

After arriving from 2022 grand finalists Parramatta Eels, Niukore, 26, was a welcome signing for the Warriors, as one of the NRL's most sought-after players.

Last year, Niukore played 19 games for the Eels on their way to a second-place finish, making more than 400 tackles and running for more than 1800 metres, along with three tries.

Signing to join the Warriors in 2021, Niukore has effectively replaced Euan Aitken among the forwards, while offering cover in the centres when needed.

Predominantly a back-rower, the Warriors' injury woes this season have seen him occupy more than one position - often during the same game.

Playing in 10 of the Warriors' 12 games, Niukore has so far made 297 tackles and run 990 metres - on course to better his 2022 returns.

Despite any uncertainty over where he might play at any given time, Niukore doesn't see his ever-changing role as a hindrance.

"It's kind of normal for me," he said. "I've been kind of used to [being] the 'Mr Fix-It' kind of guy.

"I enjoy it. It gives me a bit of flexibility wherever I go… but I love it."

Returning to Auckland has been key in Niukore finding a new love for his football. He came through the ranks as a Warriors junior, before switching to the Eels, where he racked up just shy of a century of appearances.

Despite living in Sydney - which many players aspire to - Niukore says home comforts have made his start to the season all the better.

With the Warriors' best start to a campaign since 2018, Niukore is thrilled with the move back across the Tasman.

"It's been a lot to do [with] off the field," he said. "We've got a good bunch of guys over here and we're building something pretty special.

"That obviously shows on the field. I'm loving it at the moment and my family is too."
