The Tall Ferns have been outclassed by Japan at the Asia Cup women's basketball tournament in Sydnay, going down 88-52 in their semi-final in Sydney.
Japan led 47-25 against a New Zealand side who never threatened against opponents who are chasing a sixth successive tournament title.
Charlisse Leger-Walker top-scored for the Tall Ferns with 14 points but fellow-guard Tahlia Tupaea was their most effective performer, dropping 12 points while securing two steals and two rebounds.
Japan dominated every statistic, most notably turnovers, where they made five compared to the Tall Ferns' 24.
New Zealand, who finished second in their group, were coming off an 83-78 win over the Philippines in Friday's qualification final.
They were to play off for third on Sunday against either China or Australia.
