Kiwi Ryan Fox has carded one of the best rounds in challenging conditions to sneak into the cut for the British Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

Languishing down the field at seven over par after the opening day, Fox has improved 79 positions with a four-under 67 over the second round to finish on the cutline and book a spot on the weekend.

Others - including countryman Daniel  Hillier - weren't as lucky, as windy afternoon conditions and treacherous bunkers took their toll on the world's best golfers.

Hillier, who won the British Masters this month, also improved on his opening round of seven over par, but his 73 left him six strokes outside the cut.

American world No.1 Scottie Scheffler birdied the last hole to secure his passage to the next day, while Australian defending champion Cameron Smith went one better with eagle on the last to stay alive. American 2021 champion Collin Morikawa wasn't as lucky, missing out by a stroke, while immediate predecessors Shane Lowry (Republic of Ireland) and Francesco Molinari (Italy) also fell short.

Fox seemed headed for an early finish at the start of the day, but produced a card that featured five birdies and just one bogey on the par-three sixth. He also birdied the final hole to make the cut, finishing in 15-way a tie for 62nd.

American Brian Harman holds a five-shot lead, after carding a six-under 65, sitting 10 under par. English favourite Tommy Fleetword lies second at five under, with Austrian Sepp Straka a further shot back.
