Rugby: Wellington continue unbeaten start to NPC title defence with win over Otago

Tries to all three of their starting loose forwards have helped Wellington build on a winning start to their NPC title defence, overcoming Otago 28-5 at Dunedin.

The Lions opened the scoring with a converted try to No.8 Peter Lakai in the 13th minute, with first-five Aidan Morgan adding two penalties for a 13-0 halftime advantage.

Flankers Brad Shields and Du'Plessis Kirifi touched down after the restart, as the visitors built an insurmountable 25-point lead.

Replacement Jack Leslie finally broke Otago's drought in the 67th minute, but time had run out on their hopes of a serious comeback attempt.

The result represents Wellington's second victory in as many outings, after they overcame northern neighbours Manawatu in their season-opener. They joined Taranaki and Hawke's Bay with two from two starts to their campaigns.

Tasman joined that unbeaten trio, when they strangled Auckland 24-12 at Nelson. Powerful midfielder Levi Aumua, No.8 Tim Sail and first-five Taine Robinson scored tries, as the Mako ran up at 19-0 halftime lead.

Winger Salesi Rayasi grabbed a try double for the visitors after the restart, as they threatened to make a contest of it, but hooker Quentin MacDonald put the result beyond doubt with a five-pointer.

Meanwhile, Bay of Plenty have notched up their first win of the season, overcoming Waikato 19-15 in a Chiefs franchise derby at Tauraga.

Stinging from their last-gasp loss to Auckland last week, the Steamers dominated the opening half, with tries to winger Leroy Carter and halfback Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, to open up a 14-3 advantage at the break.

Waikato responded with tries to flanker Malachi Wrampling-Alec and centre Bailyn Sullivan in the second half, but a five-pointer from first-five Lucas Cashmore kept the home side clear. Both sides now have a win and loss to start their campaigns.
