Rugby World Cup: All Blacks to finally unleash Will Jordan at fullback after irresistible form for Crusaders

In one of the most anticipated positional switches in recent memory, the All Blacks will finally unleash Will Jordan at fullback for Saturday's home finale against the Wallabies in Dunedin.

Even as the Crusaders' go-to No.15 for most of the past four years - and with five Super Rugby titles of his own now to show for it - Jordan is yet to wear that jersey in a test match.

Since his 2021 debut, Jordan has been one of the All Blacks' most potent attacking weapons, scoring an astonishing 23 tries in 23 tests - among the best tries-to-games ratios in the history of the game.

But those displays have come either on the wing or off the bench, thanks largely to the number of quality options available to coach Ian Foster.

On Saturday, that will change.

With Beauden Barrett rested, Jordan has been given the nod to play at fullback, beating out competition from debutant Shaun Stevenson, who starts on the right wing instead.

Despite being made to wait to run out in his preferred position, Jordan has the full backing of his coach to bring his Super Rugby ability to the test arena.

"I don't think there's any great challenges for him," said Foster. "He's obviously accomplished there.

"We've already said we end up playing him like he's a 15, when he's a 14. It's about the complementary skills of that back three.

"I thought Beaudy got through the last couple of tests really, really well. We had to take him off, he started to tighten up, so it's a little bit of a precautionary thing for him, but it's a great opportunity for Will."

Meanwhile, Stevenson's ascension is just reward for arguably one of the form players of the Super Rugby season.

A standout for the Chiefs on their way to this year's final, he was a surprise omission from Foster's initial 36-man Rugby Championship squad.

Injuries to Jordan and Leicester Fainga'anuku opened the door for Stevenson to be added to the squad, with the trio coincidentally now making up the back three to face the Wallabies.

And after also being made to wait for three tests to finally don the black jersey, Foster insists Stevenson is ready.

"We don't want to put anyone out there, until we feel they're really comfortable with how we play, and what test match rugby brings," he continued.

"He's been well-tested in that regard through trainings, he's been with us 3-4 weeks.

"He's gone about his work really, really well and deserves an opportunity."
