Ish Sodhi has spun the understrength Blackcaps to a convincing win over Bangladesh at Mirpur, as part of their build-up towards next month's World Cup one-day tournament in India.
With many of their frontliners rested for this tour, New Zealand turned to several fringe performers to carry their hopes against the home side, after the opening match of their three-match series was rained out.
Captain Lockie Ferguson won the toss and chose to bat first, but the opening partnership lasted less than three overs, before Will Young was caught behind for a duck.
The tourists were teetering at 36/3 in the eighth over, but Tom Blundell and Henry Nicholls combined for 95 runs to lay the foundation of their innings, with Blundell bringing up a half century and his partner falling just short.
As the middle order crumbled, Sodhi played a part with the bat and was the last man out for 35, building a valuable 32-run stand with Kyle Jamieson for the eighth wicket, as New Zealand were dismissed for 254 in their 50th over.
The Bangladesh chase was off to a slow start, accelerated with 41 runs off 28 balls for the second wicket, but stalled, when Sodhi had the scalps of Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar within three balls.
Mahedi Hasan and Mahmudullah constructed the hosts' best partnership of 42 for the sixth wicket, but Bangladesh lost their last four wickets for just 19 runs and were all out for 168, with more than eight overs left in their innings.
Sodhi finished with career-best figures of 6/39 off his 10 overs.
"Excellent win by the boys," reflected Ferguson. "The way Henry and Blundell batted today took off the pressure.
"The way Ish bowled today was exceptional. Nice to see, after all the hard work he has done.
"Nice to see Ish get the runs and Kyle as well. Nice team performance."
The third and deciding match of the series is scheduled for Tuesday/Wednesday (NZ time) at Mirpur.
