Sailing: New Zealand forced to withdraw from SailGP Taranto after boat wing destroyed in Saint-Tropez

New Zealand have been forced to withdraw from the Italian leg of SailGP in Taranto, as the damage suffered in Saint-Tropez last week proved too great to overcome.

A week ago, the Kiwi outfit was forced to pull out of the third leg of the season after a terrifying incident that saw their wing disintegrate in the wind.

Thankfully, no members of the crew were hurt in the collapse but has cost the Kiwis a chance to bounce back in Italy.

Co-chief executive Blair Tuke said the team are exploring options to ensure New Zealand's campaign is not hindered.

"We're working closely with the league to chart a path forward from here," he said. "That includes reviewing the rules for redress and compensatory points to ensure this forced non participation does not further hinder our results this season.

"As a group, we're really proud of how we've been sailing and how we bounced back on day one in Saint-Tropez after a difficult event in Los Angeles.

"It's incredibly disappointing to not be able to build on that momentum but we've faced adversity before, and we will come back stronger in Cádiz and for the rest of the season."

SailGP takes a break after Taranto before returning to action in Spain on the weekend of October 15-16.
