Sailing: New Zealand receive points compensation for no-show at Taranto Sail GP leg

New Zealand have been gifted five competition points for the weekend they will spend shorebound at Italy Sail Grand Prix.

Amokura suffered massive wing damage at Saint-Tropez two weeks ago and was unable to complete the French leg. With SailGP unable to provide replacement parts in time, the Kiwi have been forced to scratch from this week's regatta at Taranto, but will not leave the event emptyhanded.

NZ driver Peter Burling is disappointed to only receive five points, calculated on average points across the fleet, as opposed to the team's performance across the season. New Zealand took honours at Chicago, before a disappointing showing at Los Angeles and a day one bounceback at Saint-Tropez.

"It means, on top of a bad performance at Saint-Tropez, because we weren't able to compete on day two, we're also now carrying a fifth heading into Cadiz and the rest of the season," he said.

"At the same time, we're ready to accept it and move on. This is what's been decided - it's good to get something and have provicions in place, if there were to happen again."

New Zealand currently sit fifth on the season championship, nine points adrift of defending champions Australia, with Spain, Denmark and Great Britain also ahead.

All teams were consulted on the points compensation and no-one seems thrilled with the result on both sides.

"It's hard one to answer," said Australia chief executive and driver Tom Slingsby. "Competitive Tom is saying no and bad luck, and move on, but realistic Tom is saying I understand that they didn't really make any mistake here.

"At the moment, the result is decided on the water, and I think that's a big improvement on previous editions and sailing leagues. At the same time, SailGP doesn't have spares and they can't just head out on the new day with a new wing.

"Personally, I do believe they should be compensated for that with some sort of redress."

The series faces a break, before the next event in Spain on October 14/15.

"It's obviously gutting to miss this weekend's event, but we're looking forward to getting back on the racecourse and showing what we can do at Cadiz," said NZ wing trimmer Blair Tuke.
