Legendary Kiwi woodchopper Jason Wynyard has been given just weeks to live in his battle against a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
Wynyard, 49, is a nine-time world champion and has called upon those fighting instincts for the toughest battle of his life, but doctors have told him it is one he will not win.
In May, he was diagnosed with stage 4 Burkitt Lymphoma and has since undergone four cycles of chemotherapy, but learned before the fourth that the cancer had spread too far and was too aggressive to defeat.
In an Instagram post, Wynyard said doctors gave him the strongest possible chemo treatment, but on August 18, they told him there was nothing more they could do to help him and gave him weeks to live.
"We sat down with the doctors, Sharon and I, and got the pretty tough news," he said. "They gave me two weeks' survival time.
"It's been four weeks now and I'm still going, still fighting. Any time there's life, there's still hope... as long as you can keep looking for answers.
"When we got the news from the doctors it was a bit of a shock. We thought there'd be a 1 percent chance, but I made the decision I was going to fight it and Sharon has been 100 percent supportive."
With conventional medicine no longer an option, Wynyard has turned to alternative remedies, including a hyperbaric oxygen chamber and frequency treatment.
"Those two things are the main reason I can continue to operate like this," he said.
Wynyard has tried to adopt the same attitude to his health as he did to his chopping career.
"You just have to set a goal of where you want to end up and just focus on that," he said. "That's been most of my life really, setting goals and doing whatever's necessary to achieve them.
"No matter what it is, you have to set the goal and work back from there. Keep your head in the game and keep fighting."
