Kia ora, good evening and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of the Pacific Championship test between NZ Kiwis and Australia at Melbourne's AAMI Park.

With their previous wins over Toa Samoa, both these teams have already secured their spots in next week's competition final at Hamilton, so tonight holds no real significance in the contest of the championship.

That doesn't mean it's meaningless.

These trans-Tasman rivals are consistently the two best teams in the world, regardless of who actually reaches the World Cup final.

Samoa surprised everyone by reaching the final last year, sneaking past England in the semis, but the real decided came on the other side of the draw, where Australia barely edged the Kiwis to reach the title game.

The NZ players will remember that and won't be holding back against the Kangaroos, who went on to retain their world crown.

Join us at 10pm for kickoff.

TAB Odds: Australia $1.39, NZ $2.90
